32-Joseph, A Picture of Christ

There are several similarities between Joseph and Jesus. So Joseph is said to be “a picture of Christ.

First, let’s look at Joseph:

Genesis 37

  • Beloved of the his father
  • Hated/rejected by his brethren (for his words)
  • A shepherd
  • Predictions of power, mocked
  • Brethren plotted to kill him
  • Thrown into a pit and raised out
  • Sold for the price of a slave
  • Went into Egypt

Genesis 39

  • tempted and sinned not (tempted by Potiphar ‘s wife
  • falsely accused (by Potiphar’s wife)

Genesis 41

  • exalted to power
  • Gentile bride
  • At the age of 30 entered into service (Pharaoh’s service)

Genesis 42

  • the salvation of his brethren and the world – Joseph saved his brethren and the world from physical death during the famine.

Genesis 45

  • Forgives the brethren (reconciled)
  • Brethren did nothing to deserve forgiveness
  • Every knee shall bow: 

Genesis 41:43 Bow the knee,
Genesis 42 brethren bow

  • Predictions/prophecies fulfilled
  • He’s alive
  • Reunited with his father

Now let’s look at JESUS:

  • Beloved of the Father –

Matthew 3:16-17 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Matthew 17:5 (transfiguration ) … behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear him.

  • Hated/rejected by his brethren

John 12:48 for his words
Luke 9:22 Jesus said, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

Luke 17:25 But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.

  • A shepherd

John 10:11, 14 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

  • Predictions of power, mocked

Matthew 26:64 Jesus said…Hereafter you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Matthew 27:29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

  • Brethren plotted to kill him

Matthew 26:4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.
Luke 22:2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill Jesus; for they feared the people.

  • Thrown into a pit and raised out

Represents the death and resurrection

Matthew 16:21 From that time forth Jesus began to show to his disciples, how that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

  • Sold for the price of a slave

Matthew 26:15 And Judas said unto them, What will you give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

  • Went into Egypt

Matthew 2:13 And when the wise men were departed, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

  • Tempted and sinned not

Matthew 4 – Jesus tempted in the wilderness by Satan

  • Falsely accused

Matthew 26:59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;

  • Exalted to power

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Mark 12:10 …The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:

  • Gentile bride – the church is the bride of Christ
  • At the age of 30 begins His ministry

Luke 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age (was baptized, then led by the Spirit into the wilderness, then returned into Galilee and began teaching in their synagogues)

  • Every knee shall bow

Philippians 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

  • The salvation of his brethren and the world. Christ spiritually saves his brethren and the nations
  • Forgiveness 

Forgives the brethren (reconciled)

Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Forgives us as sinners – 
Matthew 9:6 But that you may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house. 
2 Corinthians 5:18-19 And all things are of God, who has reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To know, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and has committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

  • Brethren did nothing to deserve forgiveness
  • Predictions/prophecies fulfilled
  • He’s alive

Matthew 28:6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
Luke 24:23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.

  • Reunited with the Father

Sat down at the right hand of the throne of God

Hebrews 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
