Genesis 28

Jacob Left His Family (vs 1-10)

Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and instructed him.

Isaac (to Jacob): You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. Go to Paddan–aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father; and take a wife from the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother. God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may be a multitude of people. May God give you the blessing of Abraham, to you, and to your seed with you; that you may inherit the land in which you are a stranger, which God gave to Abraham.

And Isaac sent Jacob away. And Jacob went to Paddan–aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother, as Isaac had instructed.

When Esau saw:

  • that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan–aram to take him a wife from there
  • that as Isaac blessed Jacob he instructed him, saying, You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan
  • that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother and was gone to Paddan–aram
  • that the daughters of Canaan did not please Isaac his father.

Then Esau went to Ishmael and took another, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife.

Jacob went out from Beer–sheba and went toward Haran.

Jacob’s Ladder (vs 11-22)

Jacob came to a certain place and spent the night there because the sun was set. He took stones and put them under his head for his pillows and lay down to sleep. He dreamed that a ladder was set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. The Lord stood above the ladder.

In John 1:51 Jesus said, Hereafter you shall see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

Jesus is the ladder in Jacob’s dream. It is through Jesus that man has access to Heaven.

The Lord (in Jacob’s dream):

  • I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac.
  • I will give the land on which you lie to you and to your seed.
  • Your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and they shall spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south.
  • All the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your seed.
  • I am with you, and I will keep you in all places where you go.
  • I will bring you again into this land.
  • I will not leave you until I have done that of which I have spoken to you.

Jacob woke up from his dream.

Jacob: Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.

And Jacob was afraid.

Jacob: How dreadful (awesome) is this place! This is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

Jacob rose up early in the morning. He took the stone that he had used for his pillows,
and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on the top of it.

He called the name of that place Beth–el, but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.

Jacob vowed a vow.

Jacob: If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God. This stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house. And I will surely give to you the tenth of all that you shall give me.

I believe this is a conversion experience for Jacob.
He began a personal relationship with God.
