Abimelech Makes a Covenant with Abraham

Genesis 21:22-34
Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host (to Abraham): God is with you in all that you do. Swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son: but according to the kindness that I have done to you, you shall do to me, and to this land wherein you have sojourned.

Abraham: I will swear.

Abimelech knew that God is with Abraham from their encounter in the previous chapter.

Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech’s servants had violently taken away.

Abimelech: I don’t know who has done this thing: neither did you tell me, neither have I heard of it until today.

Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them to Abimelech; and they made a covenant.

Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.

Abimelech (to Abraham): What do these seven ewe lambs which you have set by themselves mean?

Abraham: You shall take these seven ewe lambs from my hand, that they may be a witness to me, that I have digged this well.

Therefore he called that place Beersheba; because there they swore.

Beersheba means “the well of the seven” or “well of the oath.”

They made a covenant at Beersheba. Then Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host rose up, and they returned into the land of the Philistines.

Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and there called on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God.

Abraham sojourned many days in the land of the Philistines.

Beersheba became the southernmost boarder of Israel.
