Genesis 20

Sarah Was Taken

Abraham journeyed toward the south country and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.

Abraham (of Sarah his wife): She is my sister.

Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

Similar to the situation in Genesis 12:10-20, in which Sarah was taken to the pharaoh of Egypt.

God came to Abimelech in a dream by night.

God (in the dream): Behold, you are but a dead man, for the woman which you have taken is a man’s wife.

Abimelech had not come near her.

Abimelech: Lord, will you slay a righteous nation? Did not Abraham say to me, She is my sister? And Sarah, even she herself said, He is my brother. In the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.

God (in the dream): Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart. I withheld you from sinning against me: therefore I did not allow you to touch her. Restore his wife to the man. He is a prophet, and he shall pray for you, and you shall live. If you do not restore her to him, know that you shall surely die, you and all that are yours.

Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning and called all his servants and told all these things in their ears, and the men were afraid.

Abimelech called Abraham.

Abimelech (to Abraham): What have you done to us? What have I done to offend you,, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done deeds to me that ought not to be done. What did you see, that you have done this thing?

Abraham: Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will kill me for my wife’s sake. And yet indeed she is my sister. She is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother. And she became my wife. When God caused me to wander from my father’s house, I said to her, This is your kindness which you shall show to me; at every place where we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.

Abimelech took sheep and oxen and menservants and womenservants and gave them to Abraham, and restored to him Sarah his wife.

Abimelech: Behold, my land is before you: dwell where it pleases you.

Abimelech (to Sarah): Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to you a covering of the eyes, to all that are with you, and with all other.

Thus she was reproved.

So Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech and his wife and his maidservants, and they bare children. For the Lord had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham’s wife.
