Genesis 10

Also found in 1 Chronicles 1:1-23

In this chapter, we are told of the sons of Shem, Ham and Japheth. This chapter gives us a preview of the confusion of languages to come in Genesis 11. Notice it takes only two generations for man to turn from God.

I look through this information for any familiar names.

Nimrod and Babel – (vs 6-10)

Cush was a son of Ham. And Cush begat Nimrod, who began to be a mighty one in the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord. The beginning of his kingdom was Babel (Babylon – NKJV. It was in the city of Babel where the people decided to build a tower to reach heaven. Genesis 11:4,9), and three other cities in the land of Shinar. From there he went into the land of Asshur (Assyria – NKJV), and built Nineveh and three other cities.

From Canaan, the son of Ham who was cursed by God, I recognize the names of future enemies of God’s people – the Hittites, the Jebusites, the Amorites and the Hivites. (vs 15-16) The Canaanite clans scattered toward Sodom and Gomorrah. (vs 19)

The Philistines arise through Ham, his son Egypt and grandson Casluhim. (vs 14)

This chapter also reveals how God divided the people when he confused the languages – by families. This method of division gives us a glimpse at the nature of God. He did not separate father from son or mother from children. Our God loves the family.
