In just ten generations, the earth was corrupt before God and filled with violence. (vs 11) The wickedness of man was great, and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. It grieved the Lord in his heart. (vs 5-6)
The Lord said, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh that has breath. Every thing that is in the earth shall die; both man, and beast, and creeping things, and the fowls of the air. (vs 7,13)
But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and he walked with God. (vs 8-9)
Noah was five hundred years old (Genesis 5:32) and he begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
God gave Noah instructions for the ark. It was HUGE. The dimensions in feet were 450x75x45. One and a half football fields in length with three levels. That’s over 100,000 square feet of floor space. God told Noah what type of wood to use – gopher wood with pitch both inside and outside. He told Noah to put a door in the side and a window. (vs 14-16)
God made a covenant with Noah. Noah was to come into the ark with his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives. Eight souls. And he would bring two of every sort of living thing, male and female, to keep them alive.
God told Noah to gather of all food that was eaten to be food them all.
Noah obeyed all that God commanded him. (vs 22)
With long-suffering God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. (1 Peter 3:20)
God did not spare the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly. (2 Peter 2:5)
